Move Sense Detection is here
We’ve just rolled out a new feature in Mileage Logbook to help improve the accuracy of automatic journey tracking, especially when it comes to detecting when you’ve left your vehicle. It's called Move Sense Detection, and it’s designed to solve a common issue some users have reported.
What is Move Sense Detection?
Move Sense Detection is a new setting available in the app under:
Settings > Tracking > More
By default, this feature is turned off, so if you want to try it out, you’ll need to enable it manually.
It only works if you’re using Automatic Motion & Fitness Mode, which relies on iOS to detect when you're driving or walking. If you're using the app with Bluetooth or Manual Tracking Mode, walk detection isn’t needed so this feature won’t apply to those modes.
Why did we add this?
We’ve been listening closely to your support requests. One recurring issue: some users noticed that their trips weren't being properly ended after they left the car. While they could manually end those journeys by opening the app, some users simply forget (or let’s be honest, they are just too lazy to do it).
After checking several logs, we discovered a pattern: in many cases, users had parked very close to their home or destination. Think of a scenario like this:
"I parked my car, walked 10 seconds to my front door, and left my phone on the table."
Here’s the problem: iOS takes 10–60 seconds to recognize walking movement, depending on the iPhone model. If you’re already inside, left your iPhone on a table, and it’s not moving by then, the app may never register that you left your car, and the trip won’t end automatically.
That’s where Move Sense Detection steps in. It helps detect subtle walking movement immediately after you exit your vehicle, so the app can end your trip more reliably.
A word of caution: sensitivity while driving
As great as this feature is, there’s one important tradeoff.
When Move Sense Detection is on, the app becomes more sensitive to movement even when you're still driving. This means:
- Touching your phone while driving (even just while parking or waiting at traffic lights) may trigger the app to think you’ve exited your vehicle.
- This could result in split journeys or early trip endings.
Best practice
To get the best results:
-
Avoid handling your phone while driving, especially after enabling this feature.
